Match Report

National Under 20 County Championship Quarter-final

Kent 27 points Gloucestershire 25 points

A very tight match saw Kent snatch the lead with just 2 minutes to play and they retained possession from the subsequent kick off to snatch victory from their visitors and secure a home semi-final against Durham.

Both teams went into this vital match with late changes to their planned selections. Kent were even forced to re-shuffle following the warm up when influential lock Charlie Self was injured.

On a perfect day for playing rugby it was Kent who started the brighter and were on the scoreboard after only 3 minutes when centre Huw Roberts scored an unconverted try finishing off some excellent play. From the kick off Kent’s ball retention was excellent and they stretched their visitor’s defence allowing Roberts to exploit the space out wide to finish well.

Gloucestershire came right back at Kent within a couple of minutes with tight head prop Jacob Hughes crashing over from short range. This was converted by Robbie Faulkner to put the visitors ahead 7-5.

In a very see-saw first half Kent scored next on 11 minutes when Alfie Orris superbly latched onto an excellent kick by Frank Reynolds to score out wide. Reynolds added the extras and Kent were back in front 12-7.

Gloucestershire cut the deficit to 12-10 on 15 minutes with a penalty from Faulkner after Kent were penalised at the breakdown.

On 19 minutes Reynolds converted his first penalty of the day to make the score 15-10 in Kent’s favour.

The next period of the game saw the visitors looking to catch & drive at every opportunity then punch up short to try and narrow the home side’s defence and eventually after 29 minutes they were successful and drove over with Brandon Mustoe getting the all important touchdown. Faulkner converted to make the score 17-15 for the  visitors.

With the last play of the first half Kent secured a penalty and the ever reliable Reynolds’ kick was on target to give Kent a single point lead at half time 18-17.

The second half kicked off and Kent were first to score on 46 minutes through the boot of Reynolds, this following a breakdown infringement to make the score 21-17. However from the restart Kent failed to clear their lines and after a period of sustained pressure Matt Loader went over out wide for an unconverted try that put the visitors in front by a single point at 22-21.

On 57 and 58 minutes the sides exchanged penalties and the visitors one point lead remained intact. Both sides had opportunities to score but a combination of good defence and a lack of attacking patience ensured this remained a tense affair.

For 20 minutes each team sought to claim the victory. In the end with 78 minutes on the clock Gloucester infringed at the breakdown just on the 10m line. Reynolds stepped up and kicked superbly to snatch the lead at the death. The resultant kick off saw Kent retain the ball and close out the hard fought victory.

A good sized crowd were royally entertained with Kent the narrow winners.

Kent now take on Durham in the National semi-final. This will be played at Cranbrook RFC on 16th April kick off 2pm

Match Report

Hertfordshire 17 points Kent 17 points

Kent travelled to Bishop Stortford RFC on Sunday to play a strong Hertfordshire Under 20s with both sides seeking to secure their place in the National Quarter-Final.

Hertfordshire started strongly and dominated the opening exchanges and were duly rewarded with a try from Seb Brownhill who drove over from short range. Jamie George added the extras to lead 7-0.

The home side continued to press and despite falling off a few tackles early on Kent managed to defend well and gradually started to get a foothold in the game. Good work from Everett, Self and Stubbington gave Kent field position deep in the Herts 22 but the opportunities were missed and Kent only came away with a penalty from Frank Reynolds to make the score 7-3.

Kent soon found themselves defending their line once more and and the sustained pressure told in the 32nd minute with another powerful forward drive led by Hertfordshire’s Karl Garside saw them score an unconverted try to lead 12-3.

The visitors continued to come under pressure but great defensive work particularly from Skinner and Bateup kept the home side out. Time and time again Hertfordshire drove the scrums with their big forwards but the tenacity of Kent’s pack and their smaller front row of Young, Otto and Simmons stood strong until half time.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Hertfordshire using their big forwards to carry and then looking to go wide. The wide attacks were snuffed out by the disciplined outside backs of Kent in Orris, Roberts, Earle and Hutston.

On 50 minutes a rare Kent foray into the Herts 22m saw Kent secure set piece ball. Reynolds received the ball from the influential Luxford took the ball to the line and put a perfectly weighted chip through for Bateup to gather and score. Reynolds added the extras and Kent were back to 12-10.

Herts reacted by making several changes to their side. They continued to look to take the game away from Kent with big fresh forwards. This seemed to have worked when once again they scored an unconverted try through Fawsett to lead 17-10.

Following the try Herts camped themselves on Kent’s line with a succession of scrums looking to kill the game off and seal victory. Kent brought on Garrett and crucially at the next scrum Kent turned the ball over. With Loyal also on at 9, Kent’s character shone through. Having cleared their lines some excellent interplay between forwards and backs orchestrated by Loyal and Reynolds saw Kent gain good field position.

With just a minute to play Kent caught and drove and Captain Josh Hawkins scored a well executed try. The difficult conversion into the wind followed. Reynolds capped a fine all round performance by nailing the kick and securing a well earned draw.

That draw saw Kent secure a home quarter-final against Gloucester on 2nd April.

Match Report

Kent U20s 39 points Surrey U20s 15 points

Kent took on their Surrey counterparts at Cranbrook RFC on Sunday in windy but dry conditions. The pitch had a good playing surface and with both teams winning their opening pool games this would be the encounter which would decide pool dominance.

In a fast flowing open game, a hat trick of tries from Alfie Orris, a pair from Max Skinner, with Jarvis Otto and Will Luxford adding the others saw Kent record a fine 39-15 victory. Despite the scoreline this was a hard fought match.

Kents forwards laid the platform for the Kent victory with set piece dominance and with Frankie Reynolds game management at 10 were clinical with their kicking game and finishing.

Kent were called on to defend resolutely especially when down to 13 men following successive yellow cards. With the score at 25 - 15 both Charlie Self and Bryan Hutston made crucial telling tackles to keep the Surrey fightback out.

Surrey never stopped attacking but crucial turnovers when close to the Kent line thwarted their aspirations. Length of the field scoring counterattacks saw Kent pleasing their home supporters.

Kent deserved their victory on the back of an all round team performance but Surrey were closer than the scoreline suggested.

Kent next take on Hertfordshire on 19th March.

Kent 78 Essex 10

Kent opened their 2017 campaign in fine style with a resounding 78 points to 10 victory over Essex at Folkestone RFC on Sunday.

Kent dominated from the off playing some scintillating rugby scoring 4 tries in the opening 14 minutes securing the bonus point. Kelley, Skinner, Orris and Everett all finished off well constructed tries and with Reynolds adding 3 conversions Kent were out of sight early.

Having made such good start it was inevitable that Kent would get a little loose and as a consequence the Essex team enjoyed a period of stability and spent time in the Kent 22 trying to come back into the game. This was not to be as Kent were completely dominant at the set piece and Essex struggled to put any constructive threat together.

On the half hour mark, Reynolds added to Kents tally and converted the try himself to make the score 33-0. Essex scored on the stroke of half time with a penalty to make the half time score 33-3.

The second half saw Kent come out firing and they ran in a further 7 tries through Skinner, Reynolds and Orris adding a second to their first half efforts. Hutston, MacKenzie, Lyne and Earle all got on the scoresheet finishing off some great team tries. Reynolds added 5 more conversions taking his personal tally to 28 points.

Essex scored a consolation try in the 70th minute.

All in all this was a comprehensive performance from a lively Kent side who played with ambition and clinical execution of the chances created.

Kent next take on Surrey at Cranbrook RFC on 26th February.
