Passing away of John Cubitt 11th August 2017 - Gravesend Rugby Club

It is with deep regret we have to inform clubs that John Cubitt passed away earlier this month surrounded by his family after a long struggle with ill health over the last year. John was well known in rugby circles around the county, having played for Gravesend's 1st XV from 1961/62 season through to 1981/1982 before moving on to skipper the Ex 1st for a number of years. John was an Hon.Life Member of the Club who had held office as, Chairman, and Treasurer. He gave up the chairmanship at Gravesend due to ill health last November.

Our immediate thoughts and condolences are with Moira his wife, Mike his brother and family in this difficult times.

Funeral arrangements are for a service at St Georges Church, Church Street, Gravesend, DA11 0DJ, at 10.30 on Friday 8 September. Followed by a cremation at Gravesend Crematorium for family members. No flowers please. Donations via

The family would like to meet all who attend at the Civic Centre, Windmill Street, Gravesend after the service, for a wake in memory of John.

Wooden Spoon Golf Day

Thirty teams of four from Kent Rugby Clubs participated in the annual Wooden Spoon Golf Day on Friday, 18th August 2017.  The best two Stableford scores from each team counted.   Congratulations are due to the winners, Park House with 101 points, who were closely followed by Dartfordians with 100 points, with Sidcup a creditable third on 94 points.

At the extremely convivial late lunch which followed, the draw, auction and donations resulted in a record £8,200 being raised for the benefit of Wooden Spoon projects in Kent to aid disadvantaged children.   Congratulations are due to all who participated and enabled this splendid sum to be raised.

Unique coaching experience with Eddie Jones

Sandra Soler-Gomez from Dartfordians RFC  and coach of the Kent Girls’ County Squad has been chosen to have a unique coach development opportunity many of us would be envious of. Courtesy of Mitsubishi, it is truly a “Money Can’t Buy” coach development experience.  Sandra has been nominated from Area 3 for her work coaching at Dartfordians and is one of twelve coaches to receive personal coaching feedback and development from Eddie Jones.

On the evening of the 26th July, Sandra will begin her unique experience with a meal and accommodation  at the Lensbury club in Teddington, discussing coaching issues.

On the morning of 27th July, she will have a working breakfast along with the group with Eddie in a private dining room, and she will have the opportunity to ask him questions on his coaching philosophy.

After breakfast she will travel to London Irish training ground to work with some players – where she will coach a small group of players, with Eddie supporting.

Sandra is delighted to have been nominated for this opportunity, and says ‘ like all coaches we support our clubs as we love the game and are passionate about its growth.   I am lucky to have been with Dartfordians RFC for several years, starting with the U9’s boys and now supporting the U15’s boys, U13’s, U15’s and U18’s girls which  takes up a lot of my time but so worth it’.

Sandra has also taken up the role of County U15 Girl’s coach for 2017-2018.

This topped last year’s participation numbers making it the largest Girls Rugby Primary Schools event in the SE.

Many thanks to the wonderful Dartfordians volunteers, coaches, admins, cooks and hostesses for your help this was a huge success.

Kent RFU Kicking Masterclass (December 14th 2016)

Jake Sharp of Bedford Blues recently came down to Canterbury RFC to take local coaches and teachers through the technique of kicking and how to coach it. The evening was extremely well attended with 30 coming along on the night and listening to Jake’s simple yet innovative take on the skill. Jake has been working with Canterbury RFC kickers in recent months and the club, with the support of Kent RFU, felt his knowledge should be more widely shared.  This masterclass was funded by Kent RFU, and they are hopeful that additional masterclasses will be run throughout the County during 2017.
