Following a recent review of the Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (EFARU) course, England Rugby will no longer deliver face-to-face first aid training. The minimum requirement for emergency first aiders involved in rugby will continue to be a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or an equivalent nationally recognised qualification.
This change is due to factors beyond RFU control that have affected the number of qualified tutors available. As a result, clubs are encouraged (as many already are) to source first aid training independently from local or national providers. This model allows for greater flexibility and helps reduce the administrative burden on volunteers.
To support clubs in making this transition, comprehensive guidance is now available on the Pitch Side First Aid & Immediate Care webpage below.
HOW DO I BOOK AN EMERGENCY FIRST AID IN RUGBY UNION COURSE?
The following is a map of training providers who offer relevant First Aid training courses and have expressed an interest in delivery with rugby. Whilst the training provider has provided their details, it is the responsibility of the club to ensure both the training course and training provider credentials are appropriate, based on the guidance above.
The RFU is not responsible for the delivery of courses or any issues arising e.g. payment, course cancellation policy etc. It is important that clubs (or any rugby activity organiser) undertake their own due diligence and fully understand any terms and conditions before confirming any agreement with any training provider.
Part of the RFU’s “Don’t be a Headcase” concussion education programme, these 20 minute online courses will explain what concussion is, how it happens and what individuals can do to help players avoid injury or return safely to playing following a concussion. There are modules for coaches, match officials, players, teachers and parents/guardians.
