Kent 40 : 30 Essex

Kent edged a high-quality contest against a powerful, well-organised Essex side, a game that genuinely could have gone either way. Both teams emptied the tank, but in the end it was Kent’s perseverance — and the impact of their Finishers — that made the crucial difference.
If one factor tipped the balance, it was Kent’s defence. Their organisation and physicality repeatedly held Essex at bay, especially in the closing stages. Essex defended superbly too, but a couple of small lapses proved costly, and Kent’s ability to keep their shape late on allowed them to absorb pressure and strike with blistering counterattack.
Kent opened the scoring through smart territorial play from Jake Ward and Josh Hacker, whose kicking set up a kind bounce for Oscar Sands to touch down. 5–0. Essex hit back after sustained pressure, their winger powering through to level at 5–5.

Under pressure on their own 22, Kent again used the breeze, Sands driving the ball deep and chasing hard to force a goal-line scramble that Tatenda Majachini pounced on for a 10–5 lead.
Essex then dominated the latter stages of the half. Scrum pressure, a fortunate bounce, and two quick taps produced three excellent tries — including one from the length of the pitch. Kent did respond when Essex briefly lost shape, allowing a simple 5m catch-and-drive finished by Ted Jenner. Half-time: Kent 15–20 Essex.
Essex began the second half strongly and deserved their next score, extending the lead to 15–25, but Kent’s Finishers immediately made their mark with a series of dominant defensive moments, Zach Turley leading the charge.
Kent struck next. Deep in Essex territory but turned over, a clearance only made it to midfield where “General” Jake Ward was waiting. He released Sands, who hit top speed and carved through to score under the posts. 20–25. Another tidy lineout and drive saw Ted power over for his second and the leveller: 25–25.
A strong kick chase from the restart forced an Essex error, and after a scramble of hacks, tackles and turnovers, Callum Chandler finished under the posts to put Kent 30–25 ahead.
But Essex refused to buckle. Their elusive No.11 danced through to level again at 30–30. The game swung back and forth, the Kent “Black Scrum Hat Crew” — Oliff, Jenner, Rothwell, Osborn and Chandler — putting in wave after wave of crucial tackles and jackals. A comedy moment followed as the ball mysteriously flew from Ed Holroyd’s hands with the line begging, mercifully hidden by a camera blackout.

Moments later, however, Holroyd won a vital jackal near halfway. From the turnover, George Souter stepped clear and raced 60m, linking first with Hacker and then Sands, who dived in for his hat-trick. 35–30 to Kent.
Essex came again, their big No.5 galloping clear, only for Hacker to drag him down five metres out. Zac Sargeant was instantly over the ball to win what proved a match-winning penalty.
From the resulting lineout, Barney Smith burst through and flew 60m before being hauled down just short. Ethan Rose secured the breakdown and Ed Holroyd dived over — but neither referee nor touch judge had a clear view, so it couldn’t be awarded. Post-match photos show the ball grounded, but c’est la vie.
The final minutes were frantic. Essex hammered away, but Kent held firm and forced two key breakdown errors. Excellent field position allowed Jenner to complete his hat-trick of lineout-drive tries, sealing a deserved 40–30 victory.
Final whistle. What a game.
